SUMMARY:Sundressed // awakebutstillinbed // Sunsleeper // Alien Boy
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, February 27\nOuter Space (11th & Mst\, Arcata)\n7-10PM // $7 – $20 // All Ages\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nSundressed:\n“We’re all in this weird world together” is a perfectly suited mantra to describe Phoenix\, Arizona’s Sundressed. The quote\, from vocalist and songwriter Trevor Hedges’ description of the message behind his own lyrics\, is hopeful and unifying – and thoroughly summarizes the band. Sundressed was initially created\, in part\, to help vocalist & songwriter Trevor Hedges maintain sobriety. Years later\, the calm of a sober life has allowed Hedges to take his struggles and successes and refocus them to a broader scope. What’s truly remarkable is that he’s managed to achieve this without straying away from his signature mixture of self-deprecation and eager determination. What’s left is an uplifting take on the heavier aspects of life\, inspiring hope without treading into trite or conceived territory.\nhttps://sundressed.bandcamp.com/ \nawakebutstillinbed:\n“For bands in San Jose\, existence itself is a political act. With almost no venues at their disposal\, and a culture dictated by billion dollar corporations\, passion is the only option. Formed in 2017\, awakebutstillinbed emerge from this environment screaming out for connection and meaning\, their music “a vivid rendering of a life spent standing on a precipice” (Pitchfork). \nAbsib’s debut What People Call Low Self-Esteem Is Just Seeing Yourself The Way Others See You is an album about being crushed by expectations\, and loaded with other people’s desires. It is untamable\, and undeniable. What began as the solo project of singer/guitarist Shannon Taylor\, absib are now a powerful group\, part At the Drive-In\, part Kim Shattuck\, and (at times) part pre-Good News Modest Mouse. Explosive and honest\, Taylor’s lyrics painfully\, purposefully tear out the false seams and sutures that shape us in the eyes of others\, revealing underneath the beautiful\, beating heart of whatever it is we call the self. On paper\, it might sound like familiar territory for emo\, but don’t be fooled: absib map out whole areas of the soul previously pushed to the shadows. Plus\, they fucking rock.” – Mike Huguenor\nhttps://awakebutstillinbed.bandcamp.com/releases \nSunsleeper:\nIndie sad rock from Salt Lake City\, Utah.\nhttps://sunsleepermusic.bandcamp.com/releases \nALIEN BOY:\n“Portland’s Alien Boy know their songs are sad. Not that there’s really any denying that fact. Since their 2015 debut EP\, Never Getting Over It\, they set their intention of exploring the darker end of their feelings – with a cover of The Smiths’ “Hand In Glove” to boot. But ruminating on sadness has historically proven to be an effective means of understanding yourself and finding some sort of inner peace in the process. Having some killer post-punk guitar tone and sensational\, swirling melodies delivered through Sonia Weber’s exceptional vocals is just the cherry on top of the band’s cathartic sundae. The band is gearing up to release their debut album\, Sleeping Lessons on August 31 via Tiny Engines. The LP’s first single\, “Somewhere Without Me\,” might just be one of the best distillations of how the band can turn their sadness into heart-swelling\, relatable anthems. \n“I wanna be adored\,” Weber howls in an homage to The Stone Roses before adding\, “But no one does it right.” Later in the song\, Weber changes the last half of the line again to “I just can’t do it right.” The surges of watery\, heavy guitars underscore the sentiment of loneliness and isolation that can feel overwhelming\, like a boulder weighing on your chest. It’s a certain brand of loneliness that extends beyond just not feeling wanted\, but extending into not feeling loved by yourself. The song hardly ever lets up from its chugging rhythms and blasting noise\, making it so Weber has to keep raising her voice and be heard against the chaos. As she yells “you want to be somewhere without me\,” you can feel all that regret\, anger\, frustration\, and self doubt bellowing from her voice. Even in a song that’s about being alone\, there’s a communal bond within those emotions that transcends the music and beats its way into the listeners ear drums. I think they call that “catharsis.” – Dusty Henry\nhttps://alienboypdx.bandcamp.com/ \nEmail outerspacearcata@gmail.com with any questions\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nAll Ages // Safer Space // Sober Space // ADA Accessible

SUMMARY:Pandemix // Cross Contamination // Wet Spot
DESCRIPTION:Pandemix (Boston\, MA):\n“Pandemix is back with In Condemnation\, a 10 song LP expanding on their political\, peace-punk indebted hardcore canon. The band churns out unapologetic outsider anthems in the tradition of CRASS records bands\, with flashes of the angular iconoclastic wit of Flux of Pink Indians or Poison Girls juxtaposed against the jarring and heavy guitar textures of Profane Existence style crust punk. It’s the appropriate tone for Pandemix’s incisive social commentary. On the album closer “Column of Light\,” they offer a thesis: “May every breath I ever draw be used in condemnation.” Vocalist Shannon Thompson’s breath finds well deserved targets at nearly every lyrical turn. In “Can’t Assimilate” for example\, she oscillates between a homophobic street harasser and a cop at a pride parade\, finding no solace in any corner of the public sphere. \nThe antagonists on In Condemnation are both political and personal. “It’s all about a relationship to violence\,” she spits in “Synthetix.” “If it’s constant and random then you can’t politicize it.” This dismal sentiment clashes appropriately against a jagged bass line and harsh militaristic drum lines. In “Oblivion Lullabies\,” a catchy rager that barrels ahead at full throttle\, she turns her focus inward. “There’s something nameless inside me / Barren and burned / I can’t believe / That I could be the only one / Who feels like a voyeur in her own life.” A culture of constant performance and decentralized surveillance is critiqued not only for its usefulness to authoritarian figures but also for how it shapes the way we think about ourselves. \nOn the soaring penultimate track\, “Past Selves\,” we are offered the closest thing to optimism that Pandemix is willing to offer. Its melodramatic\, goosebump inspiring riff sets the mood for an anthem of finding strength in oneself in the face of a degrading cultural landscape. “Remain steadfastly human in the face of all this dehumanization\,” is the coping mantra Thompson offers as the record nears its end. Even at its most uplifting\, In Condemnation shines brightness only in contrast to the constant misery and violence of modern life.” – David Combs\nhttps://pandemixpunx.bandcamp.com/ \nCross Contamination:\nEureka dark punk. \nWet Spot:\nLocal garage punks.\nhttps://wetspot.bandcamp.com/

DESCRIPTION:Friday\, February 22\n7:00-10:00 PM\n$8 – $20\nAll Ages\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nEscape-Ism:\n“ESCAPE-ISM is the nom de guerre of mythic rock ’n’ roll provocateur / theorist / revolutionary Ian F Svenonius (performer\, author\, filmmaker\, etc). Svenonius is known for his work in the music groups The Make-Up\, Chain & The Gang\, XYZ\, Weird War and author of underground bestsellers such as The Psychic Soviet\, Supernatural Strategies for Making a Rock ‘n’ Roll Group\, and Censorship Now! Recognised by Performer Magazine as the “greatest performer on the planet”\, Svenonius is profound\, prophetic\, perverse\, and poetic. His debut solo album an ‘Introduction to Escape-ism’ was released through Merge last year and teamed up a drum machine\, guitar\, cassette player\, and a single voice singing out… for a way out. Svenonius’ songs cry out for love\, justice\, redemption and insurrection\, they stomp on convention and clobber notions of what music can be. Live\, Escape-ism a new paradigm of performance: raw\, gestural\, idiotic\, sublime\, revolutionary\, poetic\, faux naif\, unknowing\, a drainage pipe that leads to who knows where.\n‘The Lost Record’ is Escape-ism’s album on Merge and is already a classic\, destined to bewitch the minds\, hearts\, and dancing shoes of any rock ’n’ roll fan who happens to discover it\, for as long as such creatures exist. Without the high-octane hype machine of the mind-control minstrels who hypnotize the hapless through the mass media\, ‘The Lost Record’ is bound for inevitable obscurity\, but—with its timeless tunes\, poignant message\, and innovative sound—rediscovery and immortal status is equally assured! SUMMARY:Buck Meek (of Big Thief) // Twain // Hollan // Emelia Grace
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, February 6\n7:00-10:00 PM\n$6-$20\nAll Ages\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nBuck Meek (Wimberley\, TX):\n“On his self-titled solo debut\, however\, Meek delivers limber\, springy songs that prioritize his songwriting and a more laid-back approach to the guitar. Before Big Thief got off the ground\, he and Lenker worked together on sparse\, guitar-driven tunes that they released under their own names. Meek’s new material hews closer to those proto-Big Thief songs—they share the same loose-limbed affability and a gentle spirit that evades frailty.” — Pitchfork\nhttps://buckmeek.bandcamp.com/\nhttps://open.spotify.com/track/2NYUjoQTERcR5ZLayYmajs?si=XqyhMkEPSVqbcwr4RVBEdw \nTwain (Richmond\, VA):\n“Twain’s vast\, searching music conjures the cosmic folk of Tim Buckley: A welcoming\, wandering rumination on life\, the afterlife\, loneliness and ‘the beauties of this earthly world\,’ ‘Solar Pilgrim’ feels at once human and otherworldly. The latest project to feature singer Mt. Davidson — he’s worked with The Low Anthem\, Spirit Family Reunion and others — Twain makes the kind of music that\, had it been made 50 years ago\, would be a cherished cult item today.” — NPR\nhttps://twain.bandcamp.com/\nhttps://open.spotify.com/track/2diIDjwlKc20RCAZbduELu?si=fJwGK3_WRJGI0Tyw9Nwsvg \nSpecial Local Support:\nHollan:\nHollan is a 22 year old singer/songwriter residing in Humboldt County\, California. There are meditations on the environment\, collective struggle\, death\, rebirth\, reasons to believe it’s worth the fight. \nFor nearly a decade\, Jordan Lee has crafted pop experiments blending orchestral instrumentation and ambient electronic sounds. Thunder Follows the Light is a testament to the power of music as a space for collective processing and emotional response. Like his other releases\, it is a highly collaborative document. SUMMARY:Deaf Wish // The Tweeners // CV
DESCRIPTION:7-10PM // $8 // All Ages\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nDeaf Wish (Melbourne\, Australia Subpop Records):\nThere’s an inherent flaw in the perennially alternating “rock is back” and “rock is dead” arguments: they are based on the idea that rock music is a logic-based choice a person consciously chooses to make. Contrary to the critics who are looking to suss out cultural trends and movements (but have never actually lifted a greasy bass cab onto a stage in order to entertain a couple dozen people)\, the decision to play loud\, distorted\, unabashed guitar-rock isn’t a strategic move but a higher calling (or curse\, depending on one’s point of view). Some might say the pursuit of rocking out via deafening amplifiers\, crusty drums and a beer-battered PA is a spiritual one\, an affliction that either strikes or doesn’t. Few groups today embody this sentiment like Melbourne’s aptly-named Deaf Wish. \nThey’re more likely to ask a fellow musician what they do for their “real” job (for one\, guitarist Jensen Tjhung works as a builder) than talk shop about publicists\, ticket counts and online promotions. They’re a grisly rock group and they’ve already signed to Sub Pop\, which is to say they’ve already succeeded beyond their wildest dreams\, so anything that comes after (performing in strange new cities\, meeting like-minded souls\, maybe even selling a t-shirt or two) is a bonus. And if they come to your town\, you would be wise to clear your calendar: “I’ve started pouring a can of beer on my head every show. If that ain’t worth five bucks then I’m quitting show biz for good\,” promises Tjhung. \nLithium Zion is their fifth full-length album (and second for Sub Pop following 2015’s Pain)\, and while it’s a rare case that a group’s fifth album is their best\, particularly any band operating under a “loud fast rules” ethos\, Deaf Wish make a strong case as the exception. Their previous albums were all recorded in makeshift studios (Is that a basement with some quilts stapled to the ceiling? Now it’s a “studio”!)\, which of course is a wise aesthetic choice for capturing the hazardous riffing\, chemically-stained vocals and fiery rhythms conjured by a group such as this\, but this step toward a slightly more professional sound only enhances their power – think of the difference between a tangled pile of firecrackers and a red stick of TNT lodged in a hornets nest. The record opens with “Easy”\, a languid rocker in the rich Australian tradition of groups like X and The Scientists. From there it’s onto “FFS”\, a moody downhill rocker sung by guitarist Sarah Hardiman (“I feel like a fool / out playing pool / hitting on you”) that confirms Deaf Wish’s relation to fellow Sub Pop employees like feedtime and Hot Snakes. “The Rat Is Back” is tense and epic; “Hitachi Jackhammer” pays a brief and noisy tribute to Hitachi’s second most notable device (you’d be forgiven for assuming this song is about vibrators). Lithium Zion is a veritable buffet of garage-punk energy\, post-punk pathos\, sardonic wit and the fearlessness that comes with Aussie rock\, a natural consequence for anyone living on a continent teeming with grapefruit-sized spiders and man-eating mosquito swarms. \nAs has always been the case\, the whole group shares vocal duties\, even drummer Daniel Twomey (you know the band is slightly unhinged if they’re letting the drummer sing). Hardiman and Tjhung are as ragged and hairy as ever\, chugging along as though krautrock was trying to speed past the late ‘70s but got caught in the sticky grasp of punk. Such is the way of Deaf Wish\, a group destined to write songs that are simultaneously stupid and sublime\, vulnerable and ferocious\, and play them with the unbridled intensity they demand. Anyone serving a life sentence to rock will surely concur.\n– Matt Korvette\nhttps://deafwishstyle.bandcamp.com/ \nThe Tweeners:\nhttps://www.facebook.com/The-Tweeners-252893024744500/\nhttp://soundcloud.com/pmp-disk \nCV:\n“Freaked out\, high-energy dance rock with sci-fi themes” out of Eureka.\nhttps://cvxl.bandcamp.com/ \nEmail outerspacearcata@gmail.com with any questions\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nAll Ages // Safer Space // Sober Space // ADA Accessible

SUMMARY:Foxtails Brigade // Belles of the Levee // Sway Sisters
DESCRIPTION:7-10PM // $5 // All Ages\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nFoxtails Brigade (San Francisco):\n“The band’s live show is a clockwork of junkyard beats\, warped orchestral sonics\, and Laura’s trademark voice and classical guitar intricacies with an A-List ensemble featuring performing members of Bright Eyes\, Van Dyke Parks\, and John Kale. The songs tackle subjects of substitute teaching in the Oakland and LA public school scenes\, steak appreciation\, and general unfairness awareness with a warped pop sensibility akin to influences like St. Vincent\, Joanna Newsom\, The Smiths\, and Spoon.\nWhile the group’s previous material\, fueled by hazy chamber-folk melodies and spectral strings\, reached inwards\, Foxtails Brigade detonates their sound in all directions. The collective of Bay Area artists’ “fully realized” lineup employs a vast kaleidoscope of peculiar percussion and newfound synthesizers alongside Patzner’s cinematic arrangements and Weinbach’s distinct guitar figures. Working with producer Saltzman\, Foxtails Brigade celebrates a newfound sense of directness and clarity without sacrificing an ounce of intricacy. Like everything the band accomplishes on their self-titled record\, it’s defiant yet wounded\, sweet yet fierce; the sound of underdogs who won’t go away quietly. If we’re sinking\, Foxtails Brigade tells us\, then let’s explode into fireworks”\nhttp://www.hungryflies.org/\nhttps://foxtailsbrigade.bandcamp.com/ \nBelles of the Levee:\n“Close harmony jazz/blues Sirens dive into the deep muddy currents of 1920s-1930s American Roots music and beyond to bring you tunes so old they’re new!”\nhttps://bellesofthelevee.bandcamp.com/releases \nSway Sisters and the Soft Opening:\nAlt folk harmonies against darkness. \nEmail outerspacearcata@gmail.com with any questions\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nAll Ages // Safer Space // Sober Space // ADA Accessible

DESCRIPTION:7:00-10PM // $5 // All Ages\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nGeist & the Sacred Ensemble:\nGeist & the Sacred Ensemble forge a doom-inflected folk ritualism; dirges tinged with Eastern psychedelia and meandering meditative trances. Their tunes exist as an ever-changing pilgrimage; transforming their abstract drifts into apocalyptic folk hymns or private confessionals. In addition to acoustic and electric guitars\, bass and percussion kits. They use gongs\, gamelans\, banjo and tools like power drills\, hammers and chains to add texture.\nGeist started solo in 2005 after Michael Ray Sauder left Geist Road in Lancaster\, Pa (PA Dutch Country) and hitched-hiked around the United States with a childhood friend. The music is inspired from that trip and experiences of growing up as a gravedigger from a Christian household. By 2009 a rotating cast of musicians joined in and Geist & the Sacred Ensemble was born.\nhttp://www.geistandthesacredensemble.com/\ngeistthesacredensemble.bandcamp.com \nDie Geister Beschwören:\nDie Geister Beschwören (“Call Up The Ghosts”) is an exploration of dusty field recordings and instrumentation collected from around the globe. Die Geister materialized in the late nineties from behind the Redwood Curtain and has been observed developing modestly alongside the psychedelic roller coasters\, Datura Blues and Beast\, Please Be Still. While these outfits satisfy a collective effort and engage in more grandiose musical pursuits\, Die Geister Beschwören demonstrates an enthusiasm for Ethnomusicology and American Primitive\, with camaraderie towards the New Weird America.\ndiegeisterbeschworen.tumblr.com\ndiegeisterbeschworen.bandcamp.com \nMedicine Baul:\nConstantly evolving Arcata music collective.\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5JZOlpiVWI&feature=youtu.be \nEmail outerspacearcata@gmail.com with any questions\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nAll Ages // Safer Space // Sober Space // ADA Accessible

Combining song and video to create intimate and powerful live performances.\nFor their RATSKIN Records. debut\, “I Am Invisible”\, Wizard Apprentice reveals thirty two minutes of experimental\, folk-oriented compositions for voice and electronics spanning across a vast landscape of melody\, space\, contemplation\, storytelling\, and idiosyncratic compositional strategies. “I Am Invisible” is an intimate exploration of the complexities of Carter’s vast array of folk based strategies of interpretation of meaning\, memory\, structure and form. Through warm\, cinematic\, funky\, arpeggiated synthesizers\, elegantly crafted string sections\, complex\, multi timbral drum programming and a uniquely refined\, intimate\, vocal presentation\, Wizard Apprentice offers her most venerable and focused work to date. \nWizard Apprentice is an independent electronic music producer\, motion graphics and live performance artist. DESCRIPTION:$10 all ages\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nCombo Chimbita (Tropical-futurist Cumbia Psych from NYC)\nRooted in Colombia and based in New York\, Combo Chimbita lives in the future. After playing together for years\, these first-generation New Yorkers—powerhouse vocalist Carolina Oliveros\, synth and bassist Prince of Queens\, guitarist Niño Lento\, and drummer Dilemastronauta—began experimenting with different traditional musical styles during their late night residencies at Barbès in Brooklyn. Exploring the connections between visual identity and improvisational long-form trips\, Combo Chimbita came together as a four-piece band after they started encouraging more vocals by Carolina Oliveros\, who tightens the rhythm with her guacharaca. “Although their backgrounds are in heavy rock\, metal\, and psychedelic funk and soul\, they gleefully fuse elements from cumbia\, 70s funaná from Cape Verde\, kompa from Haiti as well as salsa & reggae\, mixing the Guacharaca and futuristic-yet-retro synth sounds.” John Schaefer\, WNYC\nhttp://www.combochimbita.com/bio \nLa Mancha – Cumbia Psych Rock from Arcata \n~~~~~~~~~~~~\nOuter Space is run by Breakfast All Day Collective\, a dreammaker project of the ink people center for the arts. SUMMARY:Momma // Blood Hunny // From The Fog
DESCRIPTION:7-10PM // $5 // All Ages\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nMomma:\nLos Angeles songwriters Etta Friedman (18) and Allegra Weingarten (19) began their bedroom pop two piece\, Momma\, soon after meeting in high school and bonding over a mutual love of LA’s DIY scene. Inspired by the scene surrounding local all ages venues like The Smell and Pehrspace\, the two started the recording project as a way to write about and reflect on their experiences as young women growing up today. After demoing a handful of the first songs they wrote together\, Friedman and Weingarten got together over the summer of 2016 to record the six songs that would make up their debut EP\, Thanks Come Again. The pair shared roles playing each instrument on the release\, and worked with producers/engineers Sebastian Jones and Aron Kobayashi-Ritch to conjure the EP’s moody atmosphere.\nAfter the release of Thanks Come Again in August 2016 Momma began more regularly playing shows across Los Angeles\, performing alongside local favorites like Teeks (Austin Feinstein of Slow Hollows) and the solo projects of both Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tividad of Girlpool. After a year of playing shows\, Friedman and Weingarten graduated high school and each moved out of LA to pursue higher education at different universities on the other side of the country. While apart the two continued to write on their own\, slowly amassing material for their first proper LP.\nIn 2017 Friedman and Weingarten invited multi-instrumentalists Zach Capitti and Yarden Erez to fill out Momma’s live band and began working out new arrangements for their follow up.\nOn Interloper\, Momma’s new LP\, Friedman and Weingarten channel the sounds of north west garage and grunge acts like Helium and Sleater-Kinney while employing their unique songwriting and storytelling. Much of the songs on the album were initially conceived through late night conversations between the two girls once they reunited and reflected on their year spent apart. Friedman and Weingarten’s disjointed lyrics and infectious hooks give Interloper its intriguing character and show both women flexing their talents as musicians and writers. Momma captures the spirit of performers before them like Liz Phair\, The Softies\, and The Microphones\, juxtaposing bright sonic textures with ominous vocal performances and complex subject matters.\nhttps://mommaband.bandcamp.com/album/interloper \nBlood Hunny:\nArcata bluesy folk.\nhttps://soundcloud.com/bloodhoneymusic \nFrom The Fog:\nIndie rock via Arcata Arts Institute • Innovation Design Institute 2017 alumni. This might be one of your last chances to catch them before Garrett moves away for college in the Fall. \nEmail outerspacearcata@gmail.com with any questions\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nAll Ages // Safer Space // Sober Space // ADA Accessible

SUMMARY:Lisa Prank // Supermoon // The Monster Women // Mother Munchie
DESCRIPTION:7-10PM // $5 // All Ages\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nLisa Prank (Seattle):\nTrapper Keeper pop punk or babysitter punk. It’s music to make out to and also to listen to in your car while you’re driving home feeling sad.\nlisaprank.bandcamp.com \nSupermoon (Vancouver):\nPeople commonly misunderstand pop music as being all big choruses and ear-to-ear grins. If any band proves there’s room for malaise among melody\, it’s Supermoon. While they have attention-grabbing hooks and are instantly memorable for their flits of surf and post-punk\, it’s their glumness that leaves you wanting more. Sometimes you have to lean into a mood to make it through to the other side.\nallmoonsaresuper.bandcamp.com \nThe Monster Women:\nLocal Legends\, the Monster Women have been sharing their musical offerings with the world for 14 years and counting. Northern California’s best kept secret recently released an incredible 11 track self-titled album that covers a variety of styles\, not-so-subtly blending 60’s girl group and garage rock with new wave and post punk in a beautifully punchy package.
