SUMMARY:Humboldt Mutual Aid Network Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Mutual Aid Disaster Relief is a grassroots disaster relief network based on the principles of solidarity\, mutual aid\, and autonomous direct action. The Humboldt Mutual Aid Network is a working group in the MADR network working to better prepare our community for future natural disasters and better ways to cope and support each other with the daily routine of life threatening disasters of capitalism and white supremacy. We are doing that by learning how the current system does and doesn’t work\, learn about each others skills and needs\, meet people in our communities\, practice decision making together\, and build cooperative projects all while creating a local disaster network. These cooperative projects are a form of political participation in which people take responsibility for caring for each other and changing political conditions\, not just through symbolic acts and writing letters to their senators but by creating new social relations that more survivable. We have affinity groups that folks can join after becoming part of Mutual Aid:\n-Accountability Process\n-Pen Pals w/People who are Incarcerated\n-Radical Reading\n-Gardening\n-Care not Cops\n-Research on already existing Disaster response services/groups.

SUMMARY:sondra sun-odeon // nadoyel // silence in the snow
DESCRIPTION:Outer Space Arcata Presents: \nFriday January 31st\, 8pm\nThe Siren’s Song Tavern\n$6-$20 sliding scale donation \nSondra Sun-Odeon⎟Brooklyn/Los Angeles:\nA classically-trained pianist and self-taught guitar player\, her music aims to describe the inexpressible\, and reach for what is higher-than\, and beyond the realms of our tangible everyday lives. Her hard-to-define sound mixes elements of art rock\, experimental noise\, ethereal shoegaze\, Sabbath-y moments\, and lyrical song; heartbreak and longing drip from lyrics alongside regal conviction and graceful rage. Woven together by a voice in the process of rewilding and a songwriting sensibility that has its own rules and tunings; Sun-Odeon’s music creates an untamed\, darkly compelling world to escape into.\nsondrasunodeon.com\nyoutu.be/csz36LQkHcU \nNadoyel⎟Los Angeles:\nMelancholy shoegaze space folk. Spacey and heavy\, Nadoyel fills a room with ethereal tones and brings out warm memories\, continually builds and diminishes soundscapes that provoke introspection.\nnadoyel.bandcamp.com \nSilence in the Snow⎟Arcata:\nSilence In The Snow\, the dark ethereal collaboration between guitarist/vocalist Cyn M. and drummer Trevor DeSchryver\, recently relocated from Oakland to Arcata.\n“A dramatic\, chilling and passionate slice of post-punk – It comes with a menacing threat and haunted vibe as glistening guitar-lines\, barrelling bass lines and driving rhythms provide the bedrock for spectral yet powerful vocals.”\nsilenceinthesnow.com\nsilenceinthesnow.bandcamp.com

The sultry vocals and dreamy yet alt-rock-driven guitar soundscapes float over a rhythmic whiplash of drumming to fill an impressive amount of space between just two people. The band released their debut album “Catch Some” in 2017 and have since frequently toured the U.S. and Canada\, most recently in support of their newest single “This Time Last Year\,” a first glimpse into the new direction of the duo’s sound. They have most recently been compared to indie bands such as Hop Along or Land of Talk with some math rock influences.\nhttps://bernieandthewolf.bandcamp.com/\nhttps://facebook.com/BernieAndTheWolf/\nhttps://www.instagram.com/bernieandthewolf/ \nBlood Hunny\nemotionally charged bluesy bedroom pop\nhttps://bloodhunny.bandcamp.com/releases\nhttps://www.facebook.com/BloodHunny/\nhttps://www.instagram.com/bloodhunnymusic/ \nSundazed\nalternative rock\, featuring members from Moan Alisa and NASA

SUMMARY:Lisa Prank / French Vanilla / Rose Melberg / the Monster Women
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, December 2\n7:00 – 10:00 PM\n$8-$20\nAll Ages\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nLisa Prank:\nLisa Prank is a true-blue romantic. In fact\, “I’m very preoccupied with romance\,” songwriter Robin Edwards admits. On her second full-length for Father/Daughter Records\, Perfect Love Song\, Edwards acknowledges the ultimate joke of love: that there is no perfect\, so you’ll get tripped up while chasing it—but what else could possibly be more rich\, more exhilarating\, more everything\, skinned knees be damned? Stitching together pop-punk panache and pillow talk introspection\, Perfect Love Song finds Lisa Prank not in pursuit of the flawless impossible\, as the title may suggest. Rather\, she’s interested in the entire experience of love and learning through it. “I never learned how to get mad\,” Edwards sings on the reflective “Get Mad”—but she did learn how to write totally gratifying pop songs about it. Perfect Love Song is an album that takes a soft-focus gaze at romance’s sharpest points and edges\, both the exciting peaks and the scary cliffs. \nAs Edwards was navigating a drawn out\, Lifetime-movie level heartbreak\, she found herself drifting back towards the home she had in her friendships. She moved back into her old room in storied Seattle punk house\, Spruce House\, sharing a door with Tacocat’s Bree McKenna (who’s also her bandmate\, along with Julia Shapiro\, in the supergroup Who Is She?). She’d knock and ask McKenna for feedback on songs\, who wound up playing bass on the record. To produce\, Edwards tapped close friend and indie pop legend Rose Melberg of Tiger Trap\, The Softies\, and Go Sailor. Melberg’s artistic alignment and personal closeness to Edwards gave her near psychic insight into Lisa Prank’s sonic goals\, but at enough remove to provide breakthroughs to Edwards at stuck points (Melberg also co-wrote “Telescope\,” and sang harmonies on several tracks). It was a collaboration that felt like coaching\, leading her achieve her ideal polished-punk sound\, alongside Ian LeSage who engineered and mixed the record at the Vault Studios. Recording was fun\, too. Friends were around\, creating the kind of lighthearted\, mutually supportive feeling one needs surrounding them feel like themselves again after retrieving their heart back from a breakup. Lisa Prank’s last record\, Adult Teen\, used a Roland MC-505 drum machine\, for Perfect Love Song\, she traded it in for real life drummer\, Tom Fitzgibbon. \nWriting Perfect Love Song was Edwards’ opportunity “to personally say all the things that I wanted to say\, or wish I had said.” In “Scream the Truth\,” a gaslighting extinguisher anthem about reclaiming your sanity\, she gets to be mad on her terms: “I wasn’t losing my mind\,” she sings. Says Edwards\, “it’s about being frustrated seeing someone else navigate the world as a very surface-level nice person who is performatively feminist and social-justice minded\, but knowing the truth of how they treat people in their personal life.” The opening track\, “Rodeo\,” likens the searing\, sinking-in feeling of a post-fight realization—“‘cause ‘I don’t wanna be in love’/means I don’t wanna be in love/with you”—to the dangers and desires of the spectacle of love. “By now I know/this is the rodeo I chose\,” she sings\, electing to get back on her horse and ride\, acknowledging the pain that’s part of that game. \n“I wish a different emotion was so alive and exciting to me\,” Edwards laughs\, “but love is just the one that feels so visceral and consuming.” Perfect Love Song explodes the roller coaster snapshots of romance in bursts of poppy neon bright color\, with Edwards’ cheeky perspective polished to full pop-punk shine. And the mission of that genre\, one could argue\, is to keep on bopping along through the bullshit of life. To stay buoyant\, to find fun in the big what-ifs and whatevers. It what keeps the dream Lisa Prank afloat: as she sings on “Constellations\,” “still I keep on hoping this is some perfect love song/and we’ll go on and on and on\, and on and on\, and on.”\nhttps://lisaprank.bandcamp.com/ \nFRENCH VANILLA:\n“French Vanilla aren’t fucking around on How Am I Not Myself?\, but then again they never were. Even on their self-titled release (which made Bandcamp’s best of 2017)\, this freaky gang of saxophone art-punks from East Hollywood were finding a fresh way to make new wave anti-capitalist again with songs that were as unconventional as they were cool. But that achievement was not sufficient preparation for the atomic bomb they detonate on How Am I Not Myself\, an outrageously charismatic and funky sophomore LP that actually does sound like it came from Planet Claire—or at least some far groovier utopian future where the patriarchy has been smashed and everyone is free to be their true selves. French Vanilla are a band with big ideas and heaps of personality\, and How Am I Not Myself is an extremely stylish record (check out the album art\,) though the songs themselves are too weird to be called stylized. Truly\, there are so many moments on How Am I Not Myself? that seem to come completely out of left field—the way Daniel Trautfield’s jittery saxophone cuts through the sultry disco intro to “All The Time” or how vocalist Sally Spitz bursts into an avant-garde chorus of yips and whoops on mid-album highlight “Suddenly”—but afterwards makes total sense because\, duh\, you were so busy dancing you forget this was punk.”\n-Mariana Timony\n“The Best Albums of Spring 2019” – bandcamp daily\nhttps://frenchvanilla.bandcamp.com/ \nRose Melberg:\nThe former leader of Tiger Trap\, the Softies\, and Go Sailor has always been a productive overachiever – giving us a seemingly endless avalanche of mellifluous albums to treasure – but 2000-05 were uncharacteristically quiet. After moving to a small Canadian lakeside town\, she started a family\, developed into a mature singer/songwriter akin to Nick Drake\, Tracey Thorn\, and Elliott Smith\, and created her solo masterpiece\, “Cast Away the Clouds”\, the beautiful continuation of an impressive career. Now based in Vancouver\, Rose occasionally plays special shows in the Northwest.\nhttp://rosemelbergmusic.bandcamp.com/ \nThe Monster Women:\nLocal Legends\, the Monster Women have been sharing their musical offerings with the world for 15 years and counting.\nThe Monster Women\, with their unique sound and visual appeal put on a live show of spaced out ’60s meets ’80s\, sci-fi harmony driven rock’n’roll that’s not to be missed.\nhttps://themonsterwomen.bandcamp.com \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nouterspacearcata@gmail.com with any questions\n====================\nAll Ages // Safer & Sober Space // ADA Accessible

SUMMARY:Interpretace Music Documentary & Live Set by John Hardin
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 22\n8:00 – 10:00 PM\n$5-$20\nAll Ages \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nInterpretace – 40 Years of Sovereign Interpretation:\nMusical Documentary about Czechoslovakia’s seminal Industrial/Noise band in celebration of 40 years of original\, collaborative\, and brutally honest music.\n“Back in the early ’80s\, when the Czech Republic was still part of Czechoslovakia\, and Czechoslovakia was still behind the Iron Curtain\, a cassette of Interpretace’s music got smuggled out of Czechoslovakia\, and found itself in the hands of Rudolfo Protti in Northern Italy\, who then released it on his record label\, Old Europa Cafe. This release introduced Western Europe to the emerging underground Industrial/Noise scene in Socialist Czechoslovakia. Years later\, an American collector bought a trunk full of Industrial/Noise cassettes and eventually posted some of his favorites to Discogs\, a website for record collectors. In 2009\, Richard Charvat\, one of the founding members of Interpretace\, and an avid record collector himself\, saw the listing on Discogs. Until that moment\, no one in the band knew that their music had been released.\nInterpretace began making music in 1979\, and this year they celebrate 40 years of highly original\, radically collaborative and uncompromisingly honest music. It has been my pleasure to get to know them\, to play music with them\, and to honor their long career with this short documentary.” – John Hardin \nLive Set by John Hardin:\nElectrified didgeridoo with his own psychedelic video images.\nhttps://johnhardin.bandcamp.com/ \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nouterspacearcata@gmail.com with questions\n====================\nAll Ages // Safer/Sober Space // ADA Accessible

SUMMARY:Guerilla Toss / Car Made of Glass / Droll Weevil
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, October 29\n7:00 – 10:00 PM\n$6-$20\nAll Ages \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nGuerilla Toss:\n“Guerilla Toss returns to NNA Tapes with a brand new EP\, ‘What Would The Odd Do?’\, an exploration into new territories and an expansion on their recipe for twisted\, addictive rock & roll mania: fried funk\, damaged dance\, and cosmic cacophony. Fans of 70’s prog and rock greats like King Crimson and Todd Rundgren as well as modern torchbearers like Sheer Mag and Deerhoof will be joyfully united by GT’s uniquely familiar world of wonder and excitement. \nFor Kassie Carlson — singer\, songwriter\, and bandleader of Guerilla Toss — What Would The Odd Do? is unarguably the group’s most personal release in their impressive history as a music-making collective. After open-heart surgery in 2017 to remove a dangerous blood clot caused by a severe opiate addiction\, Carlson has found a new joy in life. She has since cleaned up for good\, moved to Upstate New York with her partner and Guerilla Toss drummer\, Peter Negroponte\, and has never felt more inspired. \nKassie Carlson is a true poet of punk\, the voice of an unheard generation\, the leader of The Odd. Few people have been through what she has\, and making it out alive is just the beginning. With her band of musical misfits\, Guerilla Toss is an unstoppable force of nature. Like all great and challenging art\, their message is abstract\, yet decipherable. And once the listener cracks the code\, they’ll be immersed in a uniquely familiar world of wonder and excitement. What will unite us more than to celebrate the absurd and question what we’ve been told is obvious? Let GT be just one of the many songs among the soundtrack of existential infinity and divine recovery. \nA portion of the proceeds from the album will go to the Harlem Harm Reduction Clinic\, in an attempt to further our reach in the opiate crisis battle.”\nhttps://www.guerillatoss.com/ \nCar Made Of Glass: (LAST SHOW FOLLOWED BY HIATUS)\n5 piece Post-Grind recording/performance group based out of Humboldt County\, CA. Comprised of Quentin Salmon (ex Antarctica)\, Philip Dekat (This Weeks Leader / ex Tebotjf)\, Kevin Lewis\, Quade Ross (ex Antarctica / ex Creepy Marbles / Droppedcall) & Nicholas Shultz (Goruta / ex Tebotjf). Claire plays drums standing up like Slim Jim Phantom of The Stray Cats\, while Ralph sings and plays guitar if he finds time between jumping off stage and dancing in the crowd. After moving to Humboldt\, the duo picked up C.D. Hoyle on bass and have been inspired to write more original bangerz as a power trio. The band’s influences span from Chuck Berry to the White Stripes\, with a shared love of Neil Young and AC/DC.\nhttps://drollweevil.bandcamp.com/\nhttps://ralphctill.com/drollweevil \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nouterspacearcata@gmail.com with questions\n====================\nAll Ages // Safer/Sober Space // ADA Accessible

SUMMARY:Loving / Tessoulation / Spirit Notes
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 18\n7:00 – 10:00 PM\n$8-20\nAll Ages\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nLoving:\nLoving is the musical collaboration of David Parry\, Lucas Henderson and Jesse Henderson. The band formed by way of a long-distance recording project (Victoria – Toronto) that resulted in the creation of their debut self-titled EP. After the unexpected embrace of this work\, the band reconvened in Victoria\, BC to begin playing live shows and work on new material. \nFollowing in the path of their debut EP\, If l am only my thoughts was home recorded and represents a deeper exploration of the band’s creative process – a process marked by an appreciation for the generative limitations of recording to tape. The resulting album constructs a warm and dreamy sonic landscape kept adrift by existentially oriented lyrics and an unspecified all-encompassing sense of nostalgia. \nBetween the recording and completion of If l am only my thoughts\, the band has toured extensively throughout North America and Europe\, supporting prominent artists including Alice Phoebe Lou\, Crumb and Still Woozy. For all live shows\, Loving is joined by Keenan Mittag-Degala (Elan Noon) on drums. “Nihilist Kite Flyer”\, the first single from the upcoming LP\, was released May 16th\, 2019. The full album will be released via Last Gang Records.\nhttps://loving.bandcamp.com/ \nTessoulation:\nNeo-space-soul-jazz band from Arcata. \nSpirit Notes:\nEthereal\, experimental pop hymns. \n==============================\nAll Ages // Safer Sober Space // ADA Accessible

DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, September 22\n7:00 – 10:00 PM\n$10-$20\nAll Ages \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nHARTYGA:\n“HARTYGA is a Tuvan rock band\, which was formed in Kyzyl in 2003.\nIn 2002 Salchak Orlan\, Ondar Angyr – ool\, Sergek Sandyk\, Nachyn Choreve\, Naiys Dulush (the present members of the band) – entered the Kyzyl Art College named in honor of Chyrgal – Ool. In the evenings and after the lessons participants gathered “under the stairs” and played the personally called “their music” (from the very beginning they practiced rock and jazz with the Tuvan folk songs). The first performance of the group was held on May 9\, 2003\, in the basement of the dormitory of the Tuva State University\, and after this event\,the collective has changed its name into “MOM”. The leader of the group and an initiator of its inception was guitarist and vocalist Salchak Orlan.\nIn 2004\, another legendary Tuvan music festival “Ustuu Huree” was organized\, in which the fabulous represented of American jazz\, the composer and multi-instrumentalist Sun Ra was invited as headliner with the support of his collective “The Arkestra”. The drummer Naiys Dulush says: “It was such a discovery for us! After that\, everything has changed. ” The performance of the modern jazz legend influenced almost the entire modern Tuvan musical scene\, including the group “IOM”. After this festival\, the group has increasingly inclined to jazz – rock and funk\, with some features of of traditional tuvan songs.\nIn 2008 the first performance of the group called “HARTYGA” (translated from Tuvinian means “Falcon”) was held at the festival “Ustuu-Khuree”.\nIn January 2016\, the first EP of the band (+ its video version) “Megechi Kham” was released. It’s name was taken from the song of the tuvan bard Alexander Sarzhat – ool. Almost in September 2016 in Yekaterinburg studio ‘Octopus’ the first full-length album ‘Agitator’ was recorded\, and in November of that year it has finally came out with the help of the oldest Russian labels “Soyuz”. Albert KUVEZIN\, the legendary vocalist and guitarist\, the founder of the tuvan rock genre took part in recording both albums. Because of cooperation with Kuvezin\, the sound of the band was transferred to heavy rock with psychedelic traits.\nActive tours has begun in 2016. From that day\, HARTYGA has won hearts of listeners from Moscow\, St-Petersburg\, Yekaterinburg\, Novosibirsk\, Krasnoyarsk\, Omsk\, Ufa\, Tver\, Perm and other cities of Russia.\nIn May 2017 the album “Agitator” entered the TOP – 10 most downloaded world-music albums according to the World Music Chart Europe version http://www.wmce.de/?chartUrlMonth=5&chartUrlYear= ..”\nhttps://hartyga.bandcamp.com/ \nArrington de Dionyso’s Malaikat dan Singa:\nAn uncompromising voice in contemporary music\, Arrington de Dionyso integrates ancient soundmaking techniques with trans-modernist inquiries into the nature of consciousness. His propulsive improvisations utilize voice and reeds (primarily bass clarinets and his invention the Bromiophone) as multiphonic tools in the navigation of liminal spaces between shamanic seance and rock and roll ecstasy.\nWhile deeply rooted in the punk inclination to tear down musical standards in an effort for liberation\, Arrington’s music weds no-wave iconoclasm to the spiritual searching of Albert Ayler era free jazz along with more indigenous approaches to improvisation\, reaching for an unveiling of primordially potent universalities. His compositions embrace sounds as colors\, placing emphasis on the complimentary spectrums- from circular overtones whispered through bamboo flutes to the penetrating deep and guttural howls of amplified throat singing- all with the lungs of an athlete.\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1rcJ2t_Is0 \nThe Sturgeons:\nArcata surf thrash crossover.\nwww.thesturgeonssuck.com \ndhinn-djon:\nvilhage drohn. \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nouterspacearcata@gmail.com with questions\n====================\nAll Ages // Safer/Sober Space // ADA Accessible

SUMMARY:Kitten Forever / Mr. Wrong / Sad Krotch / Firstwife
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 12\n7:00 – 10:00 PM\n$6-$20\nAll Ages \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nKitten Forever:\nKitten Forever is a Minneapolis-based drums and bass trio. Corrie Harrigan\, Laura Larson\, and Liz Elton have been playing music together for over 10 years. The trio trades off duties on each instrument\, giving equal time on drums\, bass\, and vocals to everyone. This democratic approach to performing and song writing gives the band a unified front\, deconstructing traditional stage hierarchy\, as well as a diverse set of perspectives\, with unique sounds and styles for each performer. Their fuzzed out\, caustic\, party punk is inspired by equal parts friendship and feminism\, using a stripped down aesthetic to showcase big emotions. A band of bratty banshee best friends\, Kitten Forever believes in each other\, pets\, magic\, and you.\nhttps://kittenforeverforever.com/ \nMr. Wrong:\nPortland post-punk.\nhttps://mrwrongwitches.bandcamp.com/ \nSad Krotch:\nArcata riot girl garage punks.\nhttps://www.instagram.com/sadkrotch/ \nFirstwife:\nArcata art noise project.\nhttps://firstwife.bandcamp.com/ \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nouterspacearcata@gmail.com with questions\n====================\nAll Ages // Safer/Sober Space // ADA Accessible
