SUMMARY:Buck Meek (of Big Thief) // Twain // Hollan // Emelia Grace
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, February 6\n7:00-10:00 PM\n$6-$20\nAll Ages\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nBuck Meek (Wimberley\, TX):\n“On his self-titled solo debut\, however\, Meek delivers limber\, springy songs that prioritize his songwriting and a more laid-back approach to the guitar. Before Big Thief got off the ground\, he and Lenker worked together on sparse\, guitar-driven tunes that they released under their own names. Meek’s new material hews closer to those proto-Big Thief songs—they share the same loose-limbed affability and a gentle spirit that evades frailty.” — Pitchfork\nhttps://buckmeek.bandcamp.com/\nhttps://open.spotify.com/track/2NYUjoQTERcR5ZLayYmajs?si=XqyhMkEPSVqbcwr4RVBEdw \nTwain (Richmond\, VA):\n“Twain’s vast\, searching music conjures the cosmic folk of Tim Buckley: A welcoming\, wandering rumination on life\, the afterlife\, loneliness and ‘the beauties of this earthly world\,’ ‘Solar Pilgrim’ feels at once human and otherworldly. The latest project to feature singer Mt. Davidson — he’s worked with The Low Anthem\, Spirit Family Reunion and others — Twain makes the kind of music that\, had it been made 50 years ago\, would be a cherished cult item today.” — NPR\nhttps://twain.bandcamp.com/\nhttps://open.spotify.com/track/2diIDjwlKc20RCAZbduELu?si=fJwGK3_WRJGI0Tyw9Nwsvg \nSpecial Local Support:\nHollan:\nHollan is a 22 year old singer/songwriter residing in Humboldt County\, California. SUMMARY:Escape-ism / Chamber Fables 54 / CV / Drip Torch
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, February 22\n7:00-10:00 PM\n$8 – $20\nAll Ages\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nEscape-Ism:\n“ESCAPE-ISM is the nom de guerre of mythic rock ’n’ roll provocateur / theorist / revolutionary Ian F Svenonius (performer\, author\, filmmaker\, etc). Svenonius is known for his work in the music groups The Make-Up\, Chain & The Gang\, XYZ\, Weird War and author of underground bestsellers such as The Psychic Soviet\, Supernatural Strategies for Making a Rock ‘n’ Roll Group\, and Censorship Now! Recognised by Performer Magazine as the “greatest performer on the planet”\, Svenonius is profound\, prophetic\, perverse\, and poetic. His debut solo album an ‘Introduction to Escape-ism’ was released through Merge last year and teamed up a drum machine\, guitar\, cassette player\, and a single voice singing out… for a way out. Svenonius’ songs cry out for love\, justice\, redemption and insurrection\, they stomp on convention and clobber notions of what music can be. Live\, Escape-ism a new paradigm of performance: raw\, gestural\, idiotic\, sublime\, revolutionary\, poetic\, faux naif\, unknowing\, a drainage pipe that leads to who knows where.\n‘The Lost Record’ is Escape-ism’s album on Merge and is already a classic\, destined to bewitch the minds\, hearts\, and dancing shoes of any rock ’n’ roll fan who happens to discover it\, for as long as such creatures exist. Without the high-octane hype machine of the mind-control minstrels who hypnotize the hapless through the mass media\, ‘The Lost Record’ is bound for inevitable obscurity\, but—with its timeless tunes\, poignant message\, and innovative sound—rediscovery and immortal status is equally assured! Music enthusiasts will be thrilled to be the ones clever and kind enough to have rescued this platter from oblivion.”\nhttps://escape-ism.bandcamp.com/ \nChamber Fables Fiftyfour:\nEureka “weirdo-folk psych”.\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7n1B5vfD6Hc \nCV:\nEureka post-punk.\n“Made with guitars and electronics.”\nhttps://cvxl.bandcamp.com/ \nDrip Torch:\nEureka No-Rave with members of BlackPlate & Rank Sound. \nEmail outerspacearcata@gmail.com with any questions\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nAlways All Ages // Safer Space // Sober Space // ADA Accessible

SUMMARY:Pandemix // Cross Contamination // Wet Spot
DESCRIPTION:Pandemix (Boston\, MA):\n“Pandemix is back with In Condemnation\, a 10 song LP expanding on their political\, peace-punk indebted hardcore canon. The band churns out unapologetic outsider anthems in the tradition of CRASS records bands\, with flashes of the angular iconoclastic wit of Flux of Pink Indians or Poison Girls juxtaposed against the jarring and heavy guitar textures of Profane Existence style crust punk. It’s the appropriate tone for Pandemix’s incisive social commentary. On the album closer “Column of Light\,” they offer a thesis: “May every breath I ever draw be used in condemnation.” Vocalist Shannon Thompson’s breath finds well deserved targets at nearly every lyrical turn. In “Can’t Assimilate” for example\, she oscillates between a homophobic street harasser and a cop at a pride parade\, finding no solace in any corner of the public sphere. \nThe antagonists on In Condemnation are both political and personal. “It’s all about a relationship to violence\,” she spits in “Synthetix.” “If it’s constant and random then you can’t politicize it.” This dismal sentiment clashes appropriately against a jagged bass line and harsh militaristic drum lines. In “Oblivion Lullabies\,” a catchy rager that barrels ahead at full throttle\, she turns her focus inward. “There’s something nameless inside me / Barren and burned / I can’t believe / That I could be the only one / Who feels like a voyeur in her own life.” A culture of constant performance and decentralized surveillance is critiqued not only for its usefulness to authoritarian figures but also for how it shapes the way we think about ourselves. \nOn the soaring penultimate track\, “Past Selves\,” we are offered the closest thing to optimism that Pandemix is willing to offer. Its melodramatic\, goosebump inspiring riff sets the mood for an anthem of finding strength in oneself in the face of a degrading cultural landscape. “Remain steadfastly human in the face of all this dehumanization\,” is the coping mantra Thompson offers as the record nears its end. Even at its most uplifting\, In Condemnation shines brightness only in contrast to the constant misery and violence of modern life.” – David Combs\nhttps://pandemixpunx.bandcamp.com/ \nCross Contamination:\nEureka dark punk. \nWet Spot:\nLocal garage punks.\nhttps://wetspot.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:Sundressed // awakebutstillinbed // Sunsleeper // Alien Boy
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, February 27\nOuter Space (11th & Mst\, Arcata)\n7-10PM // $7 – $20 // All Ages\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nSundressed:\n“We’re all in this weird world together” is a perfectly suited mantra to describe Phoenix\, Arizona’s Sundressed. The quote\, from vocalist and songwriter Trevor Hedges’ description of the message behind his own lyrics\, is hopeful and unifying – and thoroughly summarizes the band. Sundressed was initially created\, in part\, to help vocalist & songwriter Trevor Hedges maintain sobriety. Years later\, the calm of a sober life has allowed Hedges to take his struggles and successes and refocus them to a broader scope. What’s truly remarkable is that he’s managed to achieve this without straying away from his signature mixture of self-deprecation and eager determination. What’s left is an uplifting take on the heavier aspects of life\, inspiring hope without treading into trite or conceived territory.\nhttps://sundressed.bandcamp.com/ \nawakebutstillinbed:\n“For bands in San Jose\, existence itself is a political act. With almost no venues at their disposal\, and a culture dictated by billion dollar corporations\, passion is the only option. Formed in 2017\, awakebutstillinbed emerge from this environment screaming out for connection and meaning\, their music “a vivid rendering of a life spent standing on a precipice” (Pitchfork). \nAbsib’s debut What People Call Low Self-Esteem Is Just Seeing Yourself The Way Others See You is an album about being crushed by expectations\, and loaded with other people’s desires. It is untamable\, and undeniable. What began as the solo project of singer/guitarist Shannon Taylor\, absib are now a powerful group\, part At the Drive-In\, part Kim Shattuck\, and (at times) part pre-Good News Modest Mouse. Explosive and honest\, Taylor’s lyrics painfully\, purposefully tear out the false seams and sutures that shape us in the eyes of others\, revealing underneath the beautiful\, beating heart of whatever it is we call the self. On paper\, it might sound like familiar territory for emo\, but don’t be fooled: absib map out whole areas of the soul previously pushed to the shadows. Plus\, they fucking rock.” – Mike Huguenor\nhttps://awakebutstillinbed.bandcamp.com/releases \nSunsleeper:\nIndie sad rock from Salt Lake City\, Utah.\nhttps://sunsleepermusic.bandcamp.com/releases \nALIEN BOY:\n“Portland’s Alien Boy know their songs are sad. Not that there’s really any denying that fact. Since their 2015 debut EP\, Never Getting Over It\, they set their intention of exploring the darker end of their feelings – with a cover of The Smiths’ “Hand In Glove” to boot. But ruminating on sadness has historically proven to be an effective means of understanding yourself and finding some sort of inner peace in the process. Having some killer post-punk guitar tone and sensational\, swirling melodies delivered through Sonia Weber’s exceptional vocals is just the cherry on top of the band’s cathartic sundae. The band is gearing up to release their debut album\, Sleeping Lessons on August 31 via Tiny Engines. The LP’s first single\, “Somewhere Without Me\,” might just be one of the best distillations of how the band can turn their sadness into heart-swelling\, relatable anthems. \n“I wanna be adored\,” Weber howls in an homage to The Stone Roses before adding\, “But no one does it right.” Later in the song\, Weber changes the last half of the line again to “I just can’t do it right.” The surges of watery\, heavy guitars underscore the sentiment of loneliness and isolation that can feel overwhelming\, like a boulder weighing on your chest. It’s a certain brand of loneliness that extends beyond just not feeling wanted\, but extending into not feeling loved by yourself. The song hardly ever lets up from its chugging rhythms and blasting noise\, making it so Weber has to keep raising her voice and be heard against the chaos. As she yells “you want to be somewhere without me\,” you can feel all that regret\, anger\, frustration\, and self doubt bellowing from her voice. Even in a song that’s about being alone\, there’s a communal bond within those emotions that transcends the music and beats its way into the listeners ear drums. I think they call that “catharsis.” – Dusty Henry\nhttps://alienboypdx.bandcamp.com/ \nEmail outerspacearcata@gmail.com with any questions\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nAll Ages // Safer Space // Sober Space // ADA Accessible
