Safer Space

SAFER / SOBER SPACE

Outer Space Arcata attempts to create spaces where everyone can feel safety and freedom from the various forms of oppression faced on a daily basis.

These include but not are not limited to: racism, sexism, classism, homophobia, ageism, ableism, domestic violence and judgmental fundamentalism.

We do everything in our collective power to prevent any resemblance of these actions from happening in space. This means holding all those in our space accountable: the organizers, collective, bands, attendees, and everyone else. Our primary way of cultivating accountability is by making clear to the collective and during events what we are all about. If you or a friend experience an uncomfortable or unsafe situation at Outer Space please let a volunteer know as soon as possible so we can take any necessary actions.

Outer Space is a sober space – meaning no drug or alcohol consumption in or anywhere around the building. This is to provide a truly all ages environment for all who come to Outer Space. We are promoting a safer/sober space for all age participants by placing the focus back on the music/art/workshop and actively working to prevent the space from being merely a backdrop for alcohol consumption or substance use while simultaneously trying to create an all ages environment.

HARM REDUCTION

We take a harm reduction approach to substance use. Harm reduction is a set of practical strategies and ideas aimed at reducing negative consequences associated with drug use, addictive behavior, and violence. Harm reduction is also a movement for social justice built on respect and dignity for, the rights of people who use drugs. What this means in practice is that we do not expect or demand attendees/participants be sober at Outer Space, but we do ask that you take care not to be a risk to yourself or others.

Regardless of what substances you have or haven’t taken, you are always responsible for your actions and the way they impact those around you. Please be kind to others & please be kind to yourself.
