Volunteer at Outer Space Arcata
We are always looking for new collective members! How do you become a part of the collective? Show up to meetings and events, ask questions, and volunteer your time. There are always tasks to get done, and we love the insight from new members to help move the collective forward. If you’re interested in attending an orientation to learn more about what volunteer opportunities are currently available, please fill out our volunteer interest form and we will send out an email when we have one coming up! Orientations currently happen about once per month. You’re always welcome to attend a collective meeting (see below for more info).
The Collective Process:
We meet once a week at Outer Space to review the past week, discuss upcoming events, and work through any projects that require discussion for the whole collective. There are many sub-committees that meet separately and report back to the greater collective meetings. Sub-committees are created for smaller groups to focus on individual aspects of the collective: The Gift Shop, website, social media, finances, grants, workshop series, zine making, and so much more.
We will help teach you to do any/every aspect that you have interest in. As a part of the D.I.T. mentality, sharing each other’s skills and knowledge is vitally important to the longevity of the collective and maintaining its non-hierarchical structure.
Outer Space Arcata’s leadership has a non-hierarchical lateral structure organized to give equal chance and opportunity to everyone desiring to be involved, especially youth who may have limited leadership experience. We work to give everyone an entryway for shaping the future of the collective through peer mentorship (i.e. each one teach one; radical pedagogy) where equal importance is placed on all voices in the process.
We have remained an intersectional organization, with awareness and attempt to re-define what that means in our lived contexts. We respect unique contributions each of us are able to offer as teens, young adults, community elders, people of color, queer and trans people. We sincerely believe in Do It Together ethos, radical vulnerability, and that our capabilities are made better through collaborative work and perspective sharing.
Collective meetings are held weekly on Thursdays* at 6:30 p.m. at Outer Space and on Zoom.
*If the meeting has to be moved to a different day, advance notice is given and can be found on our Instagram.
